“Did you hear about the big party happening this weekend???” “OMG guess what? I heard that he got in big trouble yesterday he might get suspended.” “Stop worrying what your parents will think because they’ll never find out!!” “What are you doing tomorrow night? My parents won’t be home, and don’t worry, no one will find out.” “Did you see what she’s wearing today? She looks terrible!” “I’m skipping second hour and getting some coffee, want to come? It’s not bad don’t worry I do it all the time and I’ve never gotten caught!” “Do you think I can pull this off? A little midriff won’t hurt right?” “We don’t have to go to church tomorrow, let’s sleep in Jesus will understand.”
All of these phrases are common in your average teenager’s everyday conversation. Removing yourself from conversations like these is a lot easier said than done. Although I know it is very possible to let these comments go in through one ear and out the other, I also know that this high school noise is distracting. For me personally, all the distractions around me are constantly running through my head and taking up most of my thoughts. The only thing that I can do to truly remove myself completely from the high school noise that seems to be around me 24/7 is by taking time to be silent and be with God. It is extremely hard to set aside time to do this but when I do it pays off.
On the discernment day I spent with the Y2Y team, I got time to just that - to be silent and alone with God. During this time I had my bible, a pencil and paper, and of course favorite Christian songs and when I closed my eyes for just a second and prayed that God would fill my mind with inspiration my head immediately surged with positive thoughts God had given me and my blank papers filled up with my ideas in the matter of minutes. God inspired me and showed me exactly what ministry He wanted me to serve in and I have no doubt that as I take more time to listen to Him throughout the preparation process, He will continue to grace me with His guidance.
The more I grow up and learn about society and God and how they differ and intermingle, the more I realize how important it is to spend alone time with God. It is hard to hear His voice and feel Him guiding me sometimes when I am caught up in all the drama and stresses of being a high schooler. That only reiterates how crucial it is to take time each day to silence myself and focus in on God’s word.
“Be still and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10
